Renew Your Malaysia Passport on a Weekend in Johor Bahru
Wanted to renew my Malaysia Passport but did not intend to spend my annual leave just to renew my passport. Bad news is the Malaysia Embassy in Singapore no longer operates on Saturdays! Sighs.
The plan was to attempt renewing my passport on a weekend and have it ready in a couple of hours.
So if you are looking for a similiar solution, just scroll down!
Entered Johor Bahru on friday night after work and spend a night in Taman Sentosa.
On Saturday morning 6:30am, I left the hotel and head straight to
Kompleks Kementerian Dalam Negeri,
Jalan Setia Tropika,
Taman Setia Tropika, Kempas
81200 Johor Bahru
Jalan Setia Tropika,
Taman Setia Tropika, Kempas
81200 Johor Bahru
**Note: The immigration near the woodlands checkpoint does not operate on weekends anymore.
Arrived 7am, head to Block 1 (Below Photo) and queue for the queue number counter to be open at 8am.
Note: Have your documents ready, if it is not complete they will not issue you a queue number.
-Passport Photos
-MyKad & a photocopy
-Exisiting Passport
-Birth Certificate & a photocopy
*If you plan to take your passport photo there, you can take it outside the immigration.
**Surprisingly, there was no need to fill up any forms.
Got my queue number at 8:15am. My number was #119. Hmmm.
Once you get your queue number, go to the lift lobby and take the lift to level 3 and wait for your queue number to be called.
My number was called at 9:30am at counter 16.
Once your number is called, you just have to present your existing passport, MyKad and RM300 (5 Years 32 Pages Passport). Some fingerprints will be taken as well.
Thereafter, they will hold on to your existing passport and MyKad and ask you to wait to be called to collect your receipt and MyKad. (Receipt collection was Counter 23-26)
Within 5 minutes, my number was called again so I went to collect my receipt and MyKad from counter 26.
(See Below Photo)
Place your receipt at counter 11. (See Below Photo) Estimated passport collection was 10.45am.
Since there was some time to kill, I went out of the immigration and had some coffee and breakfast and returned to the counter at 10:25am.
To my delight, my number was called at 10:30am at counter 10 for me to collect my new passport!
I must compliment that this was rather a fast process and I am really thankful for that.
And yes, they will return you your old passport as well.
Just some additional info. Because I am Singapore PR, I had to transfer my Re-Entry Permit before I return to Singapore.
If you do not know what it means, it is as simple as updating the Singapore ICA that I have renewed my passport.
Since I do not have internet access in JB, I head down to KSL shopping mall and used the free Wifi at Coffee Bean to transfer my REP.
- Go to this website https://erep.ica.gov.sg/erep/index.do
- Login with your Singpass.
- Select Transfer of Re-Entry Permit.
- Select Self.
- Update your Particulars and your new Passport Details.
If you can, print out a copy of it and have it with you when you return to Singapore.
If not, at least print a PDF and save it to your Laptop or Tablet or Smartphone just in case the immigration Officer in Singapore request for it.
Hope it is clear and works for you!
Feel free to question and I will try to share more.

Hi what is the opening hour on Saturday? Are the shops open for passport photo taking in early morning?
ReplyDeleteAnd what background colour is your photo? Do you know if old IC IS fine too? Haven't changed to MyKad yet
ReplyDeleteHi Guanyee,
ReplyDeleteIf my memory did not fail me, on saturday it is from 8am-11am for collection only.
However to be safe, I would recommend you not to go later than 10am.
Regarding the IC, they only accept MyKad now.
According to the Portal Jabatan Imigresen website, If the applicant is not in possession of MyKad, a Temporary Identification Certificate (JPN.KPPK 09 or 11) AND Birth certificate is required.
2 recent identical photographs taken in front of plain white or off-white background size 35mm x 50mm.
Do not worry about the photograph if in case they do not accept yours, just outside the premises there are several shops that you can take your Passport photos according to their requirements.
Cheers, Hope it helps you!
Hi,
ReplyDeleteJust wondering about your transfer of the REP. So you had to do a transfer before you left JB with your new passport? And the transfer was approved on the spot? A transfer is only done if there is still time left on the validity right since I read on the ICA website that you should only do the renewal 2 months ahead of time.
Thanks for your help.
Hi sooks, sorry about the late reply.
DeleteThe moment your passport was renewed, the REP should be transferred because your new passport number will not be reflected on your existing REP.
Only after you have transferred your REP, your new passport number will be reflected on the updated REP. The transfer was pretty much instant, just had to go on the ICA website.
What you mentioned was a renewal, not a transfer. A transfer of REP is somewhat like an update of particulars (like your new passport number) =)
Cheers
I normally did not do the transfer until I'm back home (SG), the custom officer will do the cross check in their system and new passport's last page will indicate your previous passport number. Furthermore, your old passport still with you, so do not worry too much about transferring REP.
DeleteREP paper/printout is more important to certain citizens, like Vietnam, China, etc. They have to clarify why they leave the country. For students they will check student pass issued by ICA, touring must have return air ticket, and so on. Cheers.
Your post turned out to be immensely useful when I had to renew my passport today. Just dropping by to say thanks! :P
ReplyDeleteYou are most welcome Jerry, glad that it was useful for you.
DeleteCheers and Happy CNY to you and everyone else reading this
Bro, my gf is going into JB this thursday to renew her existing malaysian passport, she is not a PR and is on work permit in singapore. Does the process you mentioned applies the same for her? I am rather confused because google doesnt tell me which is the exact location for renewal of malaysian passport in JB.
ReplyDeleteHi Derrick, if she is going to renew her passport on a Thursday she do not have to go to taman setia tropika specifically.
ReplyDeleteAny Immigration Office or Malaysian Representative Office that does passport processing will do.
Since she is on work permit, I believe she does not need to transfer any Re-Entry permit.
Hi,
ReplyDeletedoes the setia tropika open tomorrow, saturday, since jb weekend is now friday and saturday?
Hi Ralph,
ReplyDeleteEver since weekend has been changed to Friday and Saturday, I haven't been updated with their operating hours changes.
Maybe someone here would like to help?
Thank you very much. I follow your steps and get my passport in Kukup Pontian as well as updating my REP today (Sunday). Really appreciate
ReplyDeleteGlad it helps you Nicholas!
DeleteI actually didnt know Kukup Pontian was opened on Saturday too. Thanks for the additional info!
hello all, contributing further for fellow PRs. much had changed since jul'13. here are the updates:
ReplyDelete1) starting today, all u need for PP renewal is old PP, ic(mykad) and 300 cold hard ringgit. photo, form n birth cert os not required. they do away with the photo bcos... cameras had been installed on each n every counter n yes, they are taking live photos for our PP, much like the ic renewal process. so be sure to powder n dress up (at least till neck level) so u won't regret for the next 2or5 yrs.
2) there's a Old Town Coffee just outside the premises. coffee aint great but i was there for the free wifi. so fellas, this is where u can quickly go for transfer/renewal of e-REP.
3) probably a consideration for pple who likes choices. there is another immigration branch in JB, branch name is Pekan Rabu, it only does PP n nothing else. it's located near Complex angsana along jalan skudai. i actually drop by that place while waiting for my number, there was 100 pple b4 wanting to renew their PP. A lot of time to kill... this branch has less counters and hence hands out less numbers. everything else seem the same. not sure on how fast they turnaround the numbers but i figure this might be a gd 2nd choice on a weekday.
4) lastly, sunday is a working day for immigration department due to the recent change. Saturday is NOT a working day... not sure if it's gonna change down the road.
Hi juhukia,
ReplyDeleteThank you for the updates!!! Thumbs up especially since the weekends have changed and everyone is wondering when will it be opened. Credit to juhukia~
